Sharon G. Flake wrote “The Skin I’m in.” The story takes place in 2000. The conflict of the story is that a shy girl poor girl gets bullied for being darker than others. She is a shy poor girl that doesn’t have friends or clothes. The main lesson is that that bullying makes people feel bad and can make them do bad things. That is what “The Skin I’m in is about. ”
In the beginning Maleeka was a shy poor girl that didn’t have any friends, clothes, and pretty good grades. People used similes like “you’re as black as coco beans ” and ” Your dark as night” they use similes like that to make her feel bad about her skin and herself. She knows that she doesn’t have a good home to go to when she is getting bullied and she doesn’t have a safe place to go to so she feels more bad on the fact that she is bullied and has no clothes. Right now in the story her life isn’t that great and she doesn’t think that it is going to get better. That is what the beginning is about.
By the middle of the story I started to realize she was less shy and mad some friends. The only bad part is that her friends aren’t good people, they peer pressure her to do bad things for clothes. She thinks that having friends is a good things but if they are bad then it’s not good it’s bad. After the fight she got grounded and gets depressed because she was to stay at home and do chores more and the more she gets in trouble the more chores she does, since she does so many chores she gets depressed. Also in the middle the story tells the reader that if someone tries to fight her she isn’t going to back down from anyone.
In the end of the story she burns down Mrs. Sanders room by peer pressure just to keep her only three friends, also for a bag of clothes. Her friends aren’t good people so they force her into to do bad things and she feels bad about it and if she tries to leave them they will beat her up so she can’t get out of it because she doesn’t want to get beat up. She isn’t getting bullied as she was at the beginning of the story because she is a friend with the most feared girls at school. In the end they don’t sing the “Maleeka you’re so dark ” song because they don’t want to mess with her friends. When she is expelled from school her “friends” call her to make sure she won’t rat on them because they don’t want to get trouble, but Maleeka’s mom finds out the truth about what happened at school like how she was peer pressured into doing it. Since she figured that she was peer pressured into doing that she took her back to school and to tell the truth about what happened and when she does they forgive her.
Since she burned down the classroom people think she is bad, she also got into two fights and hangs out with bad people. That doesn’t make her a bad person she just tried to make friends and she found people but they forced her into bad things for food and popularity. Just because her friends weren’t good doesn’t mean that she is bad. The conclusion is that a shy poor girl turns into a person who gets bullied into a girl with three bad friends that forced her into bad things.
